Serbia's government wants to dissolve parliament for new elections

The Serbian government has proposed dissolving parliament to pave the way for early parliamentary elections in October. Prime Minister Djuro Macut cited ongoing protests since November 2024, following a deadly train station collapse in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people. The protests initially focused on investigating the accident but have since turned against the government and widespread corruption. Originally scheduled for December next year, the election date was moved after President Aleksandar Vucic indicated his support for an earlier vote. Vucic now has 72 hours to accept the proposal and dissolve parliament.
