School supplies such as notebooks, pens and drawing blocks have become significantly more expensive in recent years. According to data released by the Statistical Office of Saxony-Anhalt in Halle, prices for school materials rose by 26 percent between 2021 and 2025. This increase outpaced the overall rise in consumer prices during the same period, which was 19.7 percent. The price surge has been particularly pronounced for paper products. School notebooks, drawing blocks and similar items cost 36.4 percent more than they did in 2021. Other stationery and art supplies, including pens, pencils and color boxes, saw a smaller but still notable increase of 23.2 percent. Textbooks have also become more expensive. Their prices were 18.1 percent higher in 2025 compared to 2021. While this rate of increase was lower than the general inflation rate, it still represents a substantial financial burden for families. In contrast, the price trend for paper products has shown some signs of stabilization. Throughout the months of 2026 up to July, prices for these items either remained stable or were slightly lower than the previous year. Specifically, in July 2026, paper products were 2.0 percent cheaper than they had been in the same month the previous year. The rising costs have placed additional strain on households preparing children for the new school year. Parents report having to make difficult choices about how to allocate their budgets, with many opting to purchase fewer books or second-hand materials to offset the increased expenses. Local education authorities have acknowledged the issue and are exploring potential solutions. Some schools have begun offering rental options for certain school supplies, while others are working with local businesses to find more affordable alternatives. However, these measures remain limited in scope and have yet to provide widespread relief. Parents and educators alike are calling for greater transparency regarding the factors driving the price increases.
