Samsung Galaxy S22 receives LineageOS support after end of support

Samsung has announced that its Galaxy S22 series will receive continued support through LineageOS after the official end of manufacturer-backed updates. The custom ROM developers have included the S22 lineup in their supported devices, extending the lifespan of these smartphones beyond the standard four-year update cycle offered by Samsung. The Galaxy S22 series was launched in 2022 with the promise of four years of operating system updates. This period has now concluded. Following the release of One UI 8 based on Android 16 in September 2025, the S22 family received only security patches until February 2027, according to Samsung. Users who wish to keep their Galaxy S22 models running on up-to-date software can now switch to LineageOS 23, which is built on Android 16 and will continue receiving security updates beyond 2027. Users should be aware that switching to LineageOS will change the user interface, as the custom ROM more closely resembles the version of Android developed by Google. Currently, LineageOS offers the software only for the Galaxy S22 Ultra as a “Nightly” build, which is updated weekly and considered stable. For the other two models in the S22 lineup, S22 Plus and the base model, the builds are expected to become available soon. Developers have already released installation instructions for these devices, and users are advised to follow them carefully to avoid bricking their phones. In addition to ongoing security updates, users of the S22 series can look forward to future updates to Android 17 via LineageOS 24. While this version is currently under development, there is no set timeline for its completion. LineageOS is known for its broad device support, offering custom ROMs not only for Samsung devices such as models from the A-series and the S23, but also for devices from manufacturers like Motorola, Nokia, Shift, and Xiaomi. The developers have also announced plans to simplify the installation process for custom ROMs using a web installer tool. However, this tool is not yet available for all device brands or models. As the custom ROM community continues to expand its reach, users of older devices like the Galaxy S22 series find themselves with a viable alternative to maintain functionality and security well beyond the manufacturer’s official support period.
