VW ID models: the smartphone becomes the digital car key

Starting from August 18th, owners of certain Volkswagen ID models can use their smartphones as digital keys to unlock, lock, and start their vehicles. This feature requires the latest software version, 6.0.1, which is available only for specific models within Volkswagen’s electric vehicle lineup. The compatible models include the new ID.Polo, ID.Cross, and ID.3 Neo, while older models such as the ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID.Buzz are also supported, only for those manufactured after April 27th, 2026. Vehicles with outdated hardware platforms remain excluded from this update. The functionality was initially announced by Samsung, which confirmed that users can access their cars using a digital key without needing a physical one. Volkswagen has since validated this capability, stating that both Android devices from other brands and iPhones are compatible with the digital key system. This marks a shift toward more integrated smart technology in automotive systems, aligning with broader industry trends. Owners can optionally store the digital key in the wallet app of a compatible smartphone. According to Volkswagen’s website, the key can be shared with friends, family members, or colleagues. Additional keys can be sent via the app, allowing multiple users to have access to the same vehicle. This feature adds convenience but also introduces new considerations around security and privacy. Samsung elaborates on the range of features enabled by the digital key. It supports several access methods, including Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for contactless entry and Near-Field Communication (NFC) for unlocking and starting the engine through simple tapping. Users can also open the trunk remotely via their smartphone. The sharing function allows for controlled access, with the ability to revoke permissions at any time, ensuring flexibility and safety. Volkswagen appears to be somewhat behind other automakers in adopting digital key technology. Companies like BMW, Mini, Polestar, and Volvo have already introduced similar features in some of their models. These manufacturers rely on the Digital Key standard developed by the Car Connectivity Consortium, a group that includes tech giants such as Apple, Google, Samsung, and Xiaomi, alongside automotive brands like BMW, Volvo, and Volkswagen itself. Tesla, meanwhile, has been utilizing its own app-based approach to smartphone key access for a longer period. This development reflects a growing emphasis on connectivity and user experience in modern vehicles. As more consumers expect seamless integration with their personal devices, automakers are increasingly prioritizing technologies that enhance convenience and security. The adoption of digital keys represents a step forward in this direction, though challenges remain in ensuring compatibility across different platforms and maintaining robust security measures.
