Landsvirkjun has signed contracts with two contractors for the expansion of the Sigöld power plant. The total value of the contracts amounts to approximately 9.5 billion Icelandic krona. Ístak is responsible for constructing the main buildings due to the expansion, while the German company DSD Noell GmbH handles the construction of turbines, cooling systems, and exhaust pipes. The contract with Ístak is valued at around 7.5 billion krona, and the contract with DSD Noell is worth about 2 billion krona. These figures do not include VAT. The current building of Sigöld will be expanded, and new infrastructure will be built for a new 65 MW turbine unit. This will increase the power station's capacity from 150 MW to 215 MW. Sigöld power plant is one of seven plants operated by Landsvirkjun in theÞjórsá area. Preparation work for the expansion began in early 2025, but the approval for the expansion was revoked in the autumn of the same year after environmental organizations filed a complaint. However, the construction permit remains valid, and a new environmental impact assessment will be conducted before the project begins in the 2029/2030 period.
