Romania shoots down drone in its airspace for first time: president

On July 24, Romania became the first country to shoot down a drone in its airspace since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The drone was intercepted approximately 114 kilometers from Bucharest by a Romanian pilot flying an F-16 fighter jet. The incident occurred over the village of Padina, where surveillance systems had previously detected the aerial target at 9:39 AM. Two Italian Eurofighter Typhoon jets and two Romanian F-16s were deployed to monitor the situation before the drone was shot down at 11:02 AM. This marks the first successful interception of a drone by Romanian forces, despite multiple previous detections of drones in the region. Earlier this year, a drone struck an apartment building in Romania, injuring two people, and both NATO and the EU attributed the attack to Russia.
