A drone has entered Romanian airspace, shot down by an F-16 pilot.

Romania's Ministry of National Defense reported that a drone entered Romanian airspace near Sulina on Friday morning along the route Sulina–Brila–Feteti–Buzu. After an alarm was raised, two Italian Eurofighter Typhoon jets from the 57th Air Base Mihail Koglniceanu and two Romanian F-16 jets from the 86th Air Base Feteti were deployed to monitor the situation. Shortly after 11 AM, a pilot from a Romanian F-16 successfully shot down the drone. According to President Klaus Iohannis, the drone was destroyed over an uninhabited area, allowing the pilot to fire from above. Romania’s radar monitoring system had detected multiple drones approaching the country’s river border overnight, part of a new wave of attacks targeting Ukraine. A regional alert (RO-ALERT) was issued by the Inspectorate for Extraordinary Situations (ISU) in Buzau, covering parts of southeastern Romania. The alert warned of potential falling objects from the air and advised people to seek shelter in basements or civilian protection areas for up to 90 minutes. Deputy Prime Minister Radu Miruta praised the pilots for their actions and emphasized the need for investments in air defense systems and military modernization.

Incident in Romania: Fighter pilot shot down by unidentified drone

A drone of unknown origin entered Romanian airspace and was shot down by a Romanian F-16 pilot around 11 a.m., according to Romanian President Nicolae Dan. The incident occurred approximately 114 kilometers east of Bucharest and took place in an uninhabited area, allowing the pilot to fire from above. This marks the first time since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 that Romania has shot down a drone in its airspace. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu stated that the country will continue investing in modern air defenses against drones. The European Commission expressed concern over the drone incursion and called for the results of the investigation. Romania has previously detected drones in its airspace but had not shot any down until this incident. Earlier this year, a drone crashed into an apartment building, injuring two people, prompting condemnation from NATO and the EU. Bucharest later expelled a Russian consul-general as a result.
