Restored Macedonian Tower reopens to visitors

The Macedonian Tower, also known as the Old Macedonian Clock Tower, has officially reopened to the public after a comprehensive restoration project led by Turkey's Culture and Tourism Ministry. Located in Edirne, this historical landmark dates back to the Roman Emperor Hadrian's construction between 117 and 138 AD, making it one of the few remaining structures from Edirne's ancient city walls. The restoration included archaeological landscaping and the creation of an exhibition detailing the city's history from the Thracian civilization through the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods to the founding of the Turkish Republic. Visitors now access the tower via elevator, followed by a staircase featuring historical exhibits, and enjoy panoramic views from an observation terrace. Archaeological findings during the restoration uncovered significant artifacts, including a 10th-century chapel annex, a Byzantine-era ceramic kiln, and an Ottoman icehouse built in 1908. The tower had previously suffered damage in the 1953 earthquake and underwent partial restoration in the 1990s.
