The U.S. space agency NASA, along with the American engine manufacturer General Electric (GE) Aerospace, has equipped a small regional aircraft with a hybrid-electric propulsion system. During a test flight, the plane reached an altitude of 30,000 feet (about 9,100 meters), which is typical for commercial airplanes. This marks the first time a hybrid-electric aircraft has achieved such a height. The aircraft used in the test was a Saab 340B, a regional jet capable of carrying 33 to 37 passengers. One of its two turboprop engines was replaced with a hybrid system consisting of an electric motor, a gas turbine, and an energy storage unit. The goal of the project, initiated in 2021, was to demonstrate that this type of propulsion could reduce fuel consumption and costs without sacrificing performance. NASA expects the technology to contribute to the development of future hybrid systems that could lower airline operating costs. The aircraft will be showcased at the Farnborough International Air Show.
