Satellite repair robot is on its way to space

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) has launched a robot into space designed to inspect, upgrade, and repair satellites in geosynchronous orbit. The mission, known as the Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV), was delayed by two years and launched on July 21 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, using a SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket. The MRV, weighing approximately three tons, is equipped with arms and tools to perform repairs and upgrades on satellites located around 36,000 kilometers above Earth. These satellites support communication, meteorology, and national security. The program, called Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites (RSGS), is a public-private partnership between Darpa and SpaceLogistics, a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman. Originally planned to launch in 2024, the project faced delays and changes in industrial partners, including the departure of Maxar Technologies in 2019.
