Radio 1 axes SIX long-time presenters including Dean McCullough and Melvin Odoom as a new raft of influencers are named as replacements

Radio 1 has announced the departure of six long-time presenters, including Dean McCullough and Melvin Odoom, as part of a sweeping schedule overhaul. The changes, effective at the end of August, see the station replace established DJs with a mix of social media influencers and emerging talent. The announcement was made via an Instagram post, which thanked the departing presenters for their contributions and wished them success in their future endeavors. Among those leaving are Rickie Haywood-Williams, Melvin Odoom, Dean McCullough, Nat O'Leary, James Cusack and Swarzy. Rickie and Melvin, who had presented the mid-morning Live Lounge slot together with Charlie Hedges for seven and five years respectively, will depart after their current runs. Charlie Hedges, 39, will stay at the station and take on the Live Lounge slot with Jeremiah Asiamah, 28, from 10.30am to 1pm on weekdays. Dean McCullough, 34, who hosted the Early Breakfast show, will be replaced by the award-winning duo Mylo & Rosie, who previously worked at Hits Radio West Yorkshire and won multiple ARIAs. GK Barry, an internet personality, podcaster and participant in I'm A Celeb, will begin a series of programs on Radio 1 starting on 10 September at 1pm. She expressed excitement about returning to the station, promising humor, chaos and personal anecdotes. Charley Marlowe, another influencer and presenter, will join Vicky Hawkesworth on weekday afternoons, while Emil Franchi takes over the Weekend Breakfast slot. James Cusack, who held the Weekend Breakfast position for 18 months, and Swarzy, who hosted the early breakfast show on Sundays, will both leave the station this summer. The changes reflect a broader shift in how Radio 1 approaches programming, emphasizing digital engagement and younger audiences. Lauren Layfield, 28, will host The Official Chart: First Look from Birmingham each Sunday between 4pm and 7pm, marking the first time a Radio 1 program will originate live from the city. Sunday evenings will feature Shanequa Paris and Oré Olukoga on Life Hacks, followed by Sian Eleri’s Chillest Show. Alyx Holcombe’s Indie Show will move to Tuesdays at 11pm. The new lineup includes a range of personalities, blending traditional broadcasting with online presence. GK Barry and Charley Marlowe, both aged 26, are among the influencers joining the station, alongside Emil Franchi, a well-known presenter. The transition appears to be carefully planned, with some of the incoming presenters having already participated in Radio 1’s presenter development initiative in 2025.
