Public urged to check expiry dates on passports to ensure travel plans go smoothly

Public officials have urged Irish citizens to verify the expiry dates on their passports to prevent disruptions to travel plans. The advice follows the issuance of over half a million passports in the first half of 2026, according to data released by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee emphasized the importance of checking passport validity well in advance of travel arrangements, particularly ahead of the peak summer travel period. The latest statistics reveal that more than 367,471 passports were issued across the island of Ireland during the first six months of the year. In Northern Ireland, over 50,000 passports were handed out, with Antrim recording the third-highest number among all 32 counties, at 17,986. Other areas in Northern Ireland saw significant numbers, including 13,004 in Down, 8,019 in Derry, 5,769 in Tyrone, 5,021 in Armagh, and 1,935 in Fermanagh. On the Republic of Ireland side, Dublin led with 93,223 passports issued, followed by Cork with 35,257. Additional high volumes were recorded in Kildare, Galway, Meath, Limerick, and Wicklow, each issuing over 10,000 passports. McEntee highlighted that the passport service continues to operate efficiently, processing applications quickly and maintaining a high standard of service. She encouraged citizens to utilize the online application system, which is accessible 24 hours a day to Irish nationals worldwide. This digital platform allows individuals to submit their applications remotely, streamlining the process and reducing wait times. For those requiring expedited service due to upcoming travel, urgent appointments are available at passport offices in Dublin and Cork. In addition to administrative efficiency, the minister praised the recent launch of the redesigned Irish passport, which includes enhanced security features and a distinctive visual identity featuring the Irish wolfhound. Citizens who applied for a passport or card after the end of June 2026 will receive the updated version, which incorporates advanced technology and design elements developed through extensive public consultation.
