Software upgrade for seven hours disabled emergency calls

An IT upgrade at the New York City emergency dispatch system in the Bronx caused a seven-hour disruption, during which approximately 5,659 calls were received but around 1,700 could not be answered. About 400 people reportedly remained without assistance because most calls were repeated attempts by callers who couldn’t determine if the issue lay with their phones or the dispatch system. The system failed to respond to calls despite connections being established, leaving callers unable to communicate. The city confirmed the problem the next day but has not yet disclosed the exact cause. Motorola provided the software equipment, and measures have been taken to prevent recurrence.
