A major automotive recall involving nearly three million vehicles has been announced in China, marking one of the largest such recalls in the country’s history. The issue centers around concerns over hidden keys and mechanical handles for car doors, which could become difficult to locate or operate after a crash or power failure. According to reports citing Reuters, nine manufacturers have joined forces to address this safety concern, with Tesla accounting for more than half of the affected vehicles. The recall comes amid growing scrutiny of hidden door mechanisms, particularly those used in electric vehicles. These systems rely on electronic signals to unlock doors, often through key fobs or smartphone apps. However, during emergencies, such as accidents or electrical system failures, these features can fail, leaving occupants trapped inside their vehicles. In some cases, individuals have reportedly been unable to escape from burning cars following collisions, raising serious safety alarms. Regulators have highlighted specific incidents where passengers were unable to exit vehicles due to malfunctioning door systems. One notable case involved a Xiaomi SU7 model, where witnesses described difficulty opening the doors after a collision and subsequent fire, preventing rescue efforts. Such scenarios have prompted calls for stricter regulations and alternative designs that ensure physical access to vehicle doors even in critical situations. Tesla, the company leading the recall, stated that approximately 2.98 million of its models, including the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, manufactured in China or imported into the country would be affected. The company explained that after severe impacts or electrical failures, the mechanical handles might be hard to identify, potentially delaying evacuation times or hindering emergency responders. Proposed solutions include applying warning stickers and updating software remotely. Additionally, Tesla indicated that the update could enable automatic window lowering after a collision, improving accessibility. Other automakers have also initiated similar recalls. Xiaomi will recall roughly 390,000 vehicles, while Leapmotor plans to recall around 371,000 units. Xpeng is recalling approximately 264,000 vehicles. Additional recalls are anticipated from other manufacturers, though exact numbers remain unspecified. This widespread action underscores the significance of the issue and the potential risks associated with current door design practices. China's regulatory environment is evolving rapidly in response to these challenges. The government has announced plans to ban hidden keys on car doors by 2027, making it the first nation to implement such a restriction. This move aims to mitigate the risks posed by electronic-only locking systems, which have gained popularity since Tesla introduced them and later been adopted by numerous other electric vehicle producers. In the United States, regulators are also examining new safety standards to reduce the likelihood of occupants being trapped in vehicles during electrical failures. While no formal decisions have yet been made, discussions are ongoing regarding potential changes to existing safety protocols.
