Tesla recalls nearly 3 mil vehicles in China over door handle safety risks

Tesla has initiated a massive recall of nearly 3 million vehicles in China due to potential safety risks associated with its door handles, according to Chinese regulatory authorities. The recall includes approximately 2.98 million electric vehicles produced in China and imported into the country, spanning several models such as the Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S. The move follows increased scrutiny of hidden, or flush-mounted, door handles used in many electric vehicles, including Tesla's, which have been linked to safety concerns in recent incidents. Chinese regulators announced the recall through the State Administration for Market Regulation, citing potential dangers posed by these door handles during emergencies. According to the notice posted on the regulator’s website, in cases of severe collisions leading to electrical failures, the door handles might impede occupants from exiting the vehicle quickly or prevent rescue personnel from accessing the interior. To address these concerns, Tesla plans to implement software updates on affected vehicles to reduce the risk. However, the company has yet to provide a formal response to requests for comment. This recall marks one of the largest in China this year and follows earlier announcements by Chinese authorities regarding stricter regulations on hidden door handles. Starting in 2027, the government plans to prohibit the use of such handles, prompting automakers to prepare for changes in design and functionality. The People’s Daily, an official publication aligned with China’s ruling Communist Party, described the widespread recall as part of a broader initiative to enhance safety standards across the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector before the impending regulation takes effect. Other prominent Chinese automakers are also participating in the recall effort. Xiaomi, known primarily for consumer electronics, is recalling over 390,000 of its vehicles, while Leapmotor, based in Hangzhou, is recalling more than 370,000 units. Additional companies, including Geely and XPENG, are also taking steps to recall certain models. Each manufacturer cites similar issues related to door handle malfunctions, indicating a common challenge within the industry concerning the reliability and safety of these components. The increased focus on door handle safety stems from a series of incidents involving electric vehicles where malfunctioning hidden handles led to entrapment scenarios. These occurrences have prompted heightened attention from both consumers and regulators, emphasizing the need for robust safety measures in vehicle design.
