Polish forces intercept Russian reconnaissance plane over the Baltic

Polish air forces detected a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, which was flying in international airspace with its transponder turned off, according to officials in Warsaw. The incident occurred amid heightened tensions following a Thursday missile strike in eastern Poland, prompting authorities to summon Russia's ambassador for discussions. Around midnight, Ukrainian drones reportedly attacked a warehouse belonging to Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, and two oil refineries in the Volgograd region and Krasnodar. The detection of the Russian aircraft took place around 7:45 PM local time near the Polish coast. According to Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane was spotted approximately 40 kilometers north of the port city of Kołobrzeg. In response, two Polish F-16 fighter jets were scrambled. The aircraft was identified as being in international airspace without a flight plan and with its transponder disabled. Officials confirmed that the Russian plane did not enter Polish airspace. This is not the first such encounter. A similar incident involving a Russian aircraft occurred near the Polish coast in October of last year. Meanwhile, in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the issue of granting Ukraine a license to produce Patriot missiles domestically during a cabinet meeting at Camp David. Trump emphasized the need for caution regarding the production of these advanced American defense technologies. He described the Patriot system as one of the most sophisticated weapons in the world and warned against allowing anyone to manufacture them without careful consideration. During the meeting, Trump highlighted a recent example where U.S. troops successfully intercepted five Iranian supersonic ballistic missiles aimed at Jordan. “Our guys were there, boom, boom, we shot down all five before they got close to their target,” he stated. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long sought the right to locally produce Patriot interceptors due to the lack of sufficient anti-missile capabilities amid ongoing Russian attacks. Discussions on potential joint production have taken place with U.S. arms manufacturers Lockheed Martin and Raytheon in recent months. Zelensky mentioned in an interview with Fox News that he had discussed the possibility of granting Ukraine licenses for Patriot missile production with Trump. In addition to the military developments, reports emerged late Saturday of a large-scale drone attack targeting areas in Russia. Russian authorities confirmed that the attack hit Volgograd, resulting in five injuries. Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the incident.
