Poland calls on Germany for help: Watch how they jointly respond to the threat from the east

Poland has called upon Germany for assistance in bolstering its eastern defense infrastructure, marking a new phase in bilateral military cooperation amid heightened security concerns following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The collaboration centers around the construction of a defensive barrier known as the "Eastern Shield," designed to deter potential Russian aggression along Poland’s eastern border with Belarus. German engineers have been deployed since June 2026 to aid in this effort, signaling a strategic alignment between the two nations despite historical tensions rooted in World War II memories. The initiative was announced in 2024 by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who described it as “a true investment in peace.” Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Poland has significantly increased its defense spending, allocating nearly 46 billion euros, approximately five percent of its GDP, making it one of NATO’s members with the highest defense expenditures relative to its economy. This funding is being used to purchase advanced weaponry and construct the Eastern Shield, a multi-layered defensive system aimed at halting armored vehicle advances from the east. The shield includes a series of obstacles placed approximately 200 meters inside Poland’s border with Belarus. These consist of heavy concrete barriers laid in three rows within muddy terrain, flanked by deep trenches and additional lines of concrete blocks. The area between these lines is currently unoccupied but can be filled with mines if necessary. According to Polish General Stanisław Czosneck, German engineers have already installed over a kilometer of such barriers in just six weeks. Their deployment is expected to continue through October. While German General Tilo Gante praised the collaborative atmosphere, analysts suggest the partnership carries more political symbolism than immediate tactical benefit. Lukasz Jasinski, an analyst at the Polish Institute of International Affairs, noted that Poland seeks to convince Germany and other Western allies that its eastern border is effectively the external boundary of both the European Union and NATO. He argued that Western partners should treat this frontier as their own, given its strategic importance. Despite the recent military cooperation, not all segments of Polish society welcome the growing alliance with Germany. Right-wing conservative party Law and Justice frequently invokes wartime memories to fuel anti-German sentiment. In autumn 2022, after an incident involving a stray Ukrainian missile, Germany offered to deploy two Patriot battery units to Poland. However, Law and Justice blocked the move, citing doubts about Germany’s commitment to defending against Russian missiles. Party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski stated that Germany’s past behavior did not inspire confidence in its willingness to engage in such operations. Poland views the United States as its primary security guarantor and has been actively seeking to strengthen ties with Washington. Currently, 10,000 American troops are stationed in Poland, and Warsaw is working to establish a permanent U.S. military base on its territory. Until that arrangement is finalized, however, German support in countering a shared eastern threat will be welcomed. The construction of the Eastern Shield represents a tangible step toward enhancing regional security while reinforcing diplomatic bonds between Poland and Germany. As the project progresses, it will likely remain a focal point of both strategic planning and public discourse in both countries.
