A Child Disappeared From a Camp: A Massive Search Rescues 119 People

A child was found safe after a large-scale search operation at a special-needs camp near Polhov Gradec, Slovenia, following reports of the missing boy. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, when panic broke out at the camp located in Briše, near Polhov Gradec. At approximately 16:47, emergency services were alerted to the disappearance of a child who requires specific care and immediate assistance due to his unique needs. A total of 119 individuals participated in the search effort, which included firefighters, police officers, and volunteers from several fire departments. The search began immediately after the alert was raised. Firefighters from the Polhov Gradec Fire Department arrived on the scene with two vehicles and 13 operational personnel. They joined forces with local police, who had already been dispatched to the area. The command of the intervention was taken over by the head of the fire service, who established an operational headquarters to coordinate the efforts. The search quickly expanded to involve members from multiple volunteer fire brigades, including those from Zalog, Butajnova-Planina, Črni Vrh, Polhov Gradec, Horjul, Šentjošt, and Dvor. Additionally, dog handlers were deployed to assist in locating the child. The terrain presented significant challenges, prompting authorities to adjust their strategy. Initially, a helicopter was activated, but this was later replaced with a drone equipped with thermal imaging technology from the Ljubljana Fire Brigade. This allowed for more accurate scanning of the area. Meanwhile, ground teams systematically searched the region, setting up perimeter lines to prevent the child from moving further away. A critical turning point came during a discussion with caregivers and parents. It was determined that the child, likely experiencing fear or distress, would respond positively to the familiar and calming voice of a trusted adult. Based on this insight, an unconventional tactic was employed: one parent was placed inside a fire truck, and their soothing voice was broadcast through a powerful speaker system. The vehicle slowly moved along the edge of the search area, allowing the child to hear the familiar sound. This approach proved successful. The child responded to the voice, and rescuers were able to pinpoint his location based on his reaction. After nearly two hours and fifteen minutes of searching, the child was found healthy and unharmed. His safety was confirmed shortly after the search concluded. In total, 119 individuals contributed to the rescue operation: 86 volunteer firefighters, 18 dog handlers, two professional firefighters, and 13 members of the Slovenian Police. The case highlighted the importance of combining modern technology with human understanding in search operations. In this instance, recognizing the child’s specific needs and adapting the response accordingly played a crucial role in achieving a positive outcome.
