In the coastal town of Piran, Slovenia, summer has become synonymous with educational opportunities as the Piran Aquarium continues its mission to engage visitors through informative workshops. This week, the aquarium has introduced free educational sessions aimed at both local residents and international tourists, offering insights into marine life care and the behind-the-scenes operations of maintaining one of Europe’s largest indoor aquariums. The workshops, titled “Summer Marine Events,” began this week and will continue throughout August. Visitors can attend these sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the last session scheduled for Thursday, August 20th. The program includes hands-on demonstrations led by marine biologist Aljoša Gračner, who guides participants through the maintenance processes essential to keeping the aquarium's 26 pools functioning smoothly. These include examining filtration systems, cooling mechanisms, and feeding procedures, all of which contribute to the well-being of the over 160 species housed within the facility. Participants have had the opportunity to observe the specialized equipment used to transport marine animals during fieldwork, providing them with a unique perspective on how such tasks are executed on a larger scale compared to home aquarium setups. One visitor noted the experience was particularly enlightening, highlighting the contrast between personal hobby setups and professional-grade facilities. The aquarium also offers information on the care and conservation of marine organisms, including some of the oldest inhabitants such as sea urchins and sea stars. According to the aquarium’s expert guide, Manja Rogelja, these topics are frequently asked about by visitors, prompting the organizers to tailor their educational content accordingly. She explained that the aquarium operates as a closed system, requiring minimal water changes due to high summer temperatures, which currently maintain a stable temperature of just 18 degrees Celsius. This year marks a significant transformation for the Piran Aquarium, having undergone extensive renovations. It welcomes approximately 55,000 visitors annually, with two-thirds being international guests. The facility serves as a hub for both education and entertainment, drawing crowds eager to learn about marine ecosystems while enjoying the visual spectacle of aquatic life. The aquarium, operated under the auspices of the University of Primorska Science Centre, continues to expand its outreach efforts, ensuring that both locals and tourists gain valuable knowledge about marine biology and conservation practices. With ongoing programs and seasonal activities, the Piran Aquarium remains a key attraction in the region, blending scientific research with public engagement.
