Its primary goal is to foster collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and communities to ensure the ocean’s health and resilience. The initiative outlines ten key challenges that span ecological, social, economic, and technological dimensions. These include understanding and mitigating marine pollution, protecting ecosystems and biodiversity, ensuring sustainable food security from the sea, developing equitable blue economies, leveraging the ocean’s potential in climate change mitigation, enhancing coastal community resilience, expanding ocean observation systems, creating digital ocean models, promoting access to knowledge and technology, and transforming human attitudes toward the ocean. Their findings indicate that while winters remain extremely cold, they are insufficient to sustain the perennial ice found in caves. The expedition also focused on monitoring microclimatic conditions and exploring connections between underground and surface ecosystems within the Northern Velebit National Park. For instance, condensation water produced by air conditioning units, although not suitable for drinking, can be repurposed for household tasks such as watering plants, cleaning bathrooms, filling steam irons, and certain technical processes. Research conducted in Palestine in 2020 showed that individual air conditioning units could produce between 8.63 and 15.1 liters of water per day, depending on humidity levels, unit power, and operating duration. While the water quality varies based on the cleanliness of the unit and collection containers, it generally meets standards for irrigation purposes. As the Decade of Ocean Science enters its final years, the need for comprehensive action becomes increasingly clear. With four years remaining until 2030, the emphasis is shifting towards translating scientific insights into actionable solutions. Public engagement initiatives like the new podcast aim to bridge the gap between academic research and everyday understanding, ensuring that the knowledge gained from studying the ocean benefits society as a whole. The success of these efforts will depend on sustained commitment from governments, researchers, and citizens alike, all working towards a more sustainable future for the planet's largest ecosystem.
