Start of the week and big traffic jams in the north of BiH: Columns of vehicles at several border crossings

The article reports on traffic disruptions and congestion in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) due to road maintenance and reconstruction works. It outlines several affected sections of highways and motorways, including the A-1 autostrada between Kakanj and Lašva, and parts of the M-5 motorway near Izačić-Bihać. The closures and detours have led to increased traffic delays at border crossings such as Izačić, Velika Kladuša, and Gradina. Some border crossings, like Gradiška, report less congestion but still experience delays. Additionally, new regulations under the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) are causing longer waits at border checkpoints. Specific updates include the opening of the Brčko border crossing for vehicles up to 3.5 tons and the Karakaj crossing for all vehicle categories starting December 2, 2025, while the Šepak crossing remains closed to heavy trucks.

Congestion due to weekends and holidays, caution due to evacuations and a new border system.

The article reports on increased traffic congestion due to the new Entry/Exit System (EES) for EU border crossings, combined with holiday periods and seasonal travel. It warns drivers to exercise caution due to frequent landslides caused by heavy rains, particularly on roads through gorges and near stone slopes. Several sections of highways and motorways are closed or restricted for maintenance work, with traffic redirected to alternative routes. Specific closures include parts of the A-1 motorway, the M-5 highway, and temporary detours at border crossings like Izačić-Bihać. The article also notes that vehicle waiting times at border crossings are currently limited to 10–30 minutes but could increase due to the EES system.
