After the earthquake in Venezuela, the international airport is still not functioning.
Ten days after an earthquake struck Venezuela, its largest international airport in Maiquetía remains non-operational for commercial flights. The airport, located 30 kilometers north of Caracas, suffered significant damage during the June 24 earthquake, which had magnitudes of 7.5 and 7.2. Only a runway for humanitarian aid flights has been reopened. The interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, did not provide updates on the airport’s restoration during a recent press conference. Commercial flights have been diverted to smaller airports in cities like Valencia, Maracaibo, and Barquisimeto, but these locations are now experiencing severe delays due to overcrowding. According to El País, the terminal buildings and runways at Maiquetía will require at least three months to repair. Additionally, staff shortages are expected to further delay operations, as many pilots, flight attendants, and airport workers lived in nearby La Guaira, where homes were destroyed or damaged in the quake. At least 2,645 people are confirmed dead, while tens of thousands remain missing.
