Severina acquitted in court

After three years of legal proceedings behind closed doors, Croatian pop star Severina Vučković has received good news. The Zagreb municipal court has acquitted her of charges related to coercive behavior towards school principal Ljiljana Klinger and former director of the Zagreb Child Protection Clinic Gordana Buljan Flander. Prosecutors had requested ten months of conditional imprisonment, as reported by Jutarnji list.

The verdict is not yet legally binding, but the municipal court ruled that the singer's actions did not constitute criminal behavior. According to the indictment, Severina sent over 150 messages to both women in 2021, containing varied content. She took this course of action due to concerns about their responses during a process determining where her son would live—either with his mother or his father, Milan Popović. While Klinger responded to some messages and asked Severina to stop sending them, Buljan Flander did not reply at all.

The trial was held behind closed doors due to the protection of a minor child, but after the first hearing, Severina publicly stated she did not know what others would have done in her situation. She claimed the state failed to protect her and her child, instead filing charges against her for coercive behavior. She argued that the real responsibility should lie with the two women, who acted from positions of power and contributed to her losing custody of her son for 20 months.

Severina’s actions were driven by her concern over the responses she received regarding the decision on where her son would reside.

Ljiljana Klinger, the school principal, expressed surprise at the ruling. She questioned what message this verdict sends to others. “I am surprised by the judgment,” she said. “This sends a message to everyone else that they can behave like Severina and resolve their life problems in such a way.”

The case has drawn significant public attention in Croatia, highlighting tensions between high-profile individuals and institutional authorities. Severina, known for her music career and public presence, faced serious legal consequences that could have impacted her personal and professional life. Her acquittal marks a turning point in a prolonged legal battle that lasted several years.

The trial underscored the complexities surrounding parental rights, child welfare, and the pressures placed on celebrities navigating legal challenges. Severina’s defense emphasized the emotional and psychological stress she experienced during the custody dispute, which influenced her communication with the two women involved. This perspective contrasts with the prosecution's view that her actions constituted coercive behavior.

As the verdict is not yet final, further legal steps might still be taken. However, the current ruling suggests that the court does not see her actions as meeting the threshold for criminal liability. This outcome could influence similar cases in the future, particularly regarding how courts assess communications in sensitive family matters involving minors.

The case also raises broader questions about the balance between protecting children's interests and ensuring that individuals are not unfairly targeted in legal processes. It highlights the need for clear guidelines on what constitutes appropriate behavior in such situations, especially when high-profile figures are involved. As the legal process continues, the focus will likely remain on whether the initial charges were justified based on the evidence presented.
