According to reports from local weather stations and environmental agencies, a layer of Saharan dust has been drifting over the Adriatic Sea, carried by powerful southern winds. This phenomenon, which is not uncommon in the region, results in a noticeable change in sky color and atmospheric clarity. The National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) recommends limiting strenuous outdoor activities during periods of elevated particle counts, especially when readings exceed 50 micrograms per cubic meter. For the broader public, however, these brief episodes of Saharan dust typically carry little to no risk. In Slovenia, the situation is similarly unfolding. A wave of Saharan dust has reached the country, leading to increased PM10 levels in the air. The highest recorded values were observed in Črni Križ and Kranj, where concentrations reached 54 and 51 micrograms per cubic meter respectively. In contrast, areas such as Kopře and Trbošće recorded lower levels, ranging from 13 to 15 micrograms. Environmental monitoring stations in Ljubljana, including Bežigrad, Celovška, and Vič, registered moderate readings, generally below 30 micrograms per cubic meter. These levels, while above normal, are still considered acceptable for the general population. The Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO) has warned that the presence of Saharan dust can contribute to localized thunderstorms, particularly in the northwestern part of the country. Forecasters predict that a weakening high-pressure system will move through the region overnight, bringing cooler air and increasing atmospheric instability. This shift is expected to lead to scattered showers and stronger gusts, particularly in mountainous regions. Although the immediate threat to public health remains low, the agency advises heightened vigilance, especially for vulnerable groups. Meanwhile, drought conditions persist in parts of eastern and southeastern Slovenia. Over the past month, temperatures have remained consistently above average, with limited rainfall exacerbating dry soil conditions. Recent rains have brought some relief to western and central regions, but the eastern areas continue to experience extreme aridity. The Sušomer portal, maintained by ARSO, reports that moisture levels in the east range from 30 to 80 percent, compared to 80 to 150 percent in the west. In the Upper Savinja Valley, Gorenjska, and Kočevje, drought conditions remain severe, with forecasts indicating that at least 40 millimeters of rain would be needed to restore normal water levels. Water resources across the country are under stress, with many rivers maintaining low flows. Approximately 25 percent of hydrological stations report critically low water levels, with some recording as low as 10 percent capacity. The Mura River continues to hold the lowest flow rates, raising concerns about the sustainability of water supplies. Groundwater levels have also declined significantly in several regions, including Ljubljana, Kočevje, and the Karst area. In the Mur River basin, groundwater reserves have deteriorated to very low levels, prompting officials to request restrictions on non-essential water use in four municipalities. As the week progresses, weather models suggest that the Saharan dust cloud will gradually dissipate, with clearer skies expected by late in the week. However, traces of the dust will likely linger in the atmosphere for several days. Environmental scientists emphasize that while the current episode poses no major threat to public health, continued monitoring of air quality and water resources remains essential, particularly in regions experiencing prolonged dry spells.
