Misdiagnosed and left without a uterus, hospital admits responsibility

A 30-year-old woman was incorrectly diagnosed with a highly aggressive tumor at the University Hospital Kepler in Ljubljana, leading to the unnecessary removal of her uterus, both fallopian tubes, and one ovary. The error was discovered after the tissue sample was found to be contaminated, meaning there was no medical justification for the surgery. The patient has experienced significant psychological distress due to the fear of dying from cancer. Following the discovery of the mistake, a state prosecutor's investigation was launched, followed by unsuccessful negotiations for compensation and preparation for legal proceedings. The hospital eventually admitted responsibility, which could affect the outcome of any legal case. The hospital offered €70,000 in compensation, but the victim’s lawyer rejected the offer. The hospital now proposes a joint selection of an expert witness, with costs covered by the hospital, and intends to take responsibility for all future health, psychological, and financial consequences the patient might face.

She had a healthy uterus removed: the hospital is willing to pay additional compensation

In August of last year, a 30-year-old woman had her healthy uterus removed at the University Hospital Kepler (KUK) in Austria after tissue samples indicated aggressive cancer. However, after the operation, it was discovered that the tissue sample had been contaminated, leading to the incorrect diagnosis. The hospital apologized for the error and now wishes to pay additional compensation to the patient, despite already paying 70,000 euros based on an assessment by a patient advocacy group. The patient described the experience as psychologically traumatic, stating she believed she would die for nearly two months. The hospital director explained that the decision to remove the uterus was made due to suspicions of cancer supported by imaging tests. Authorities are still investigating how the contamination occurred.

Bias read (Center): The article presents the situation factually, quoting both the hospital and the patient's lawyer without overtly favoring either side. It does not use emotionally charged language or selectively omit information to support a particular viewpoint. The focus is on the medical error and subsequent redr
