Fires are ravaging Europe, with mass evacuations in several countries

Po Evropi se širijo požari zaradi sušnih razmer in visokih temperatur, kar je povzročilo množice evakuacij v več državah. V Španiji je en sam požar uničil 31.000 hektarjev, medtem ko so v Hrvašku gasilci borili z obsežnim požarem, kjer so našli truplo in poškodovali številne ljudi. V Grčiji so pri evakuaciji pomagala ribiška plovila, medtem ko so v Nemčiji evakuirali več kot 2000 ljudi zaradi požara blizu meje z Belgijo. V Franciji so aretirali skoraj 500 ljudi zaradi sumljivega povzročitve požarov. Požari so bili posledica močnega vetra in suše, kar je otežilo gašenje.

Two women died and two infants were injured in severe flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains in northwestern Spain on Saturday, according to local authorities. The disaster occurred in small villages within the autonomous community of Castilla y León, with additional reports indicating one missing person was found unharmed. The incident took place amid ongoing extreme heatwaves, drought conditions, and devastating wildfires that have plagued Spain for several weeks. The floods and landslides were caused by intense rainfall that struck the region, leading to massive amounts of debris, mud, and rocks cascading down hillsides into nearby villages. Local officials described the situation as dire, noting that powerful storms had triggered large-scale landslides. Video footage shared by local media showed dark masses of rock and mud engulfing entire settlements, leaving homes and infrastructure vulnerable to collapse. In addition to the fatalities, two young children required medical attention due to injuries sustained during the disaster. One individual who was initially reported missing was later located safely. The affected area has been under close monitoring, with emergency services working to assess the extent of damage and provide aid to residents. The impact of the weather-related crisis comes at a time when Spain is already grappling with widespread wildfires. In the northern region of Aragon, over 16,600 hectares of land have burned, forcing more than 1,000 people from their homes in 19 villages. Regional authorities have deployed over 600 firefighters equipped with approximately 35 aircraft and heavy machinery to combat the fires, which threaten historic monasteries situated on steep and rugged terrain. Meanwhile, in southern Spain’s Andalusia region, hundreds of evacuees have been allowed to return home after fire crews brought under control a wildfire that raged for ten days and scorched more than 25,000 hectares of land. The efforts to manage these multiple crises highlight the severity of the environmental challenges facing the country. Across Europe, similar situations are unfolding as prolonged dry spells and record-high temperatures contribute to the spread of wildfires. In France, nearly 500 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of starting forest fires since the beginning of summer, including more than 180 minors. Authorities attribute around 70 percent of these incidents to intentional acts, while others resulted from negligence. In Greece, a major fire broke out near the coastal town of Sithonia, prompting the coast guard to evacuate over 300 people using fishing boats. More than 140 firefighters, nine planes, and seven helicopters worked to contain the blaze, which threatened both forests and tourist facilities along popular vacation spots. The fire was exacerbated by strong winds that fanned the flames and made containment efforts particularly challenging. In western Germany, near the border with Belgium, more than 2,000 people were evacuated from a village as a fire approached. Firefighters faced additional difficulties due to the presence of unexploded ordnance from World War II, leading to several explosions during suppression operations. In central England, a fire started on a field and spread to a golf course before reaching residential areas in Stourbridge, destroying several homes. France has also seen significant fire activity, with the village of Luglon in the southwestern region of Landes experiencing an evacuation of 525 residents after a fire consumed over 1,000 hectares of dry pine forest. The area had previously suffered extensive damage from major fires this summer. In connection with the fires near the Bordeaux airport, where two firefighters died in July, authorities have detained a 15-year-old boy suspected of starting the blaze. Spain continues to face mounting pressure from its firefighting teams, who have logged over 8,200 hours of aerial firefighting this year, surpassing the total from all of 2025. Last year saw record-breaking destruction, with 393 square kilometers of land lost to wildfires. The combined threats of flooding, landslides, and wildfires underscore the growing vulnerability of regions to climate-induced disasters.
