Pope calls for an end to violence against Palestinians

Pope Leo XIV has called for an end to violence against Palestinians on the West Bank. The Pope urged the international community to accelerate efforts toward finding a two-state solution for achieving a just and lasting peace, according to the German news agency dpa. His appeal came during an afternoon prayer at Castel Gandolfo. The ongoing violence against Palestinian civilians on the West Bank has intensified in recent months. Jewish settlers have been carrying out attacks against the majority Palestinian population, despite the international legal status of these settlements as illegal. Over the past year, more than 76 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and Jewish settlers on the West Bank. Since January 2023, 127 Palestinian villages have become targets of such violence, leading to over 6,390 Palestinians being forced to flee their homes. Jewish settlers have begun encircling the Palestinian village of Kusra, located south of Nablus, which has resulted in its residents losing access to basic necessities. In response to this immediate situation, officials at the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in occupied Palestinian territory and in Brussels have called for action against the settlers. This escalation has drawn attention from both local and international authorities. The presence of approximately half a million Jewish settlers among three million Palestinians on the West Bank continues to fuel unrest. These settlers live in areas designated as illegal under international law, yet they remain a permanent fixture in the region’s political landscape. Reports indicate that the number of incidents involving settler activity has risen significantly, with many cases resulting in civilian casualties.
