In September, the Slovenian National Theatre Nova Gorica announced its call for subscription renewals for the 2026/2027 season, with a focus on three autumn premieres that reflect themes of critical thinking, life values, and community. The theatre invited audiences to become part of their society through these productions, which aim to explore complex social issues through artistic expression. The first of these premieres, Jesen moje mladosti (Autumn of My Youth), will open shortly after the first week of September. Directed by Patrizia Jurinčič Finžgar, the play will feature letters written by Srečko Kosovel and Fanica Obid, two young individuals who critically engage with the world around them. The production, described as an intimate documentary fable, will have its premiere at Epicentro in Nova Gorica, a modern cultural hub established during the European Capital of Culture year. This setting underscores the thematic connection between art and contemporary societal reflection. Later in September, the theatre will present Noč v Zagorju (Night in Zagora), a tribute to the visionary poet Srečko Kosovel, known for his philosophical insights into physics and mathematics. His untimely death at age 22 has left a lasting impact, and this production will revisit his work and life through a dramatic interpretation. The play will be directed by Neda Rusjan Bric, who also serves as the artistic director of the SNG Nova Gorica. The performance will take place at the main stage of the theatre, offering a space for remembrance and exploration of Kosovel’s legacy. In mid-October, the theatre will stage a dramatization of the novel Ženske v temi (Women in the Theme) by Maja Haderlap. The adaptation, written by Nina Kuclar Stiković, will be directed by Brina Klampfer Merčnik. The story follows a daughter visiting her mother in a village to inform her of an urgent relocation from their family home. This initial event leads to a mosaic of memories, exploring questions of identity, home, and belonging through the internal worlds of the characters Mira and Ana. The production will take place at the smaller stage of the theatre, emphasizing personal narratives within broader social contexts. The season will continue in the spirit of these three autumn premieres, with some exceptions that promise a touch of humor. The theatre encourages subscribers to join them in this journey, reinforcing the idea that art can serve as both a mirror and a catalyst for societal reflection. The programme reflects a commitment to addressing pressing issues while maintaining a balance between serious inquiry and artistic creativity.
