586 held in drug cases in Kozhikode in one month

In recent weeks, authorities in Kerala have intensified their efforts against drug trafficking and abuse, leading to a significant number of arrests across multiple districts. According to reports from local media outlets, over 586 individuals have been detained in drug-related cases within the Kozhikode district alone within a single month. This large-scale operation, known as Operation Toofan, has seen the police register 573 cases and seize substantial amounts of illicit substances, highlighting the growing concern surrounding drug use and distribution in the region.

Operation Toofan, which began in early June, has resulted in a notable impact on the local community. The police have managed to recover 6 kilograms of suspected cannabis and 317 grams of suspected MDMA. Additionally, four cases involving the possession of commercial quantities of narcotic drugs were recorded, alongside 53 cases concerning smaller quantities. The operation also saw the registration of 505 cases under Section 27 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, underscoring the breadth of the crackdown. The police chief, A.P. Shoukath Ali, emphasized the need for increased surveillance and preventive measures, particularly in areas where anti-social elements have taken root, such as the abandoned Mananchira Comtrust Handloom Weaving Factory.

The campaign has extended beyond Kozhikode, with similar actions taking place in other districts. In Ernakulam, the police registered 175 cases and arrested 182 individuals in just two days. These arrests were part of a broader initiative known as "The Narco Hunt," which focused on targeting both the supply and consumption of narcotics. During these operations, law enforcement teams conducted searches at various locations, including railway stations, bus stands, and commercial establishments, resulting in the seizure of diverse narcotics. Among the confiscated items were 2.45 grams of MDMA, 115.13 grams of cannabis, and 5.34 grams of hashish, among others. The operation also led to the arrest of individuals for consuming drugs and for dealing in banned tobacco products.

One particularly striking case emerged in Thrissur district, where seven individuals, including two women, were apprehended after a 308-gram haul of MDMA was discovered. Part of this quantity was reportedly hidden in the private parts of one of the women, indicating the lengths to which traffickers go to conceal their goods. The operation began when police intercepted a vehicle in Vaniyampara, suspecting the occupants' behavior. Further investigations revealed that the drugs were being transported by a group returning from a party in Palakkad. The suspects were eventually traced back to their residences, leading to additional seizures and arrests. The total value of the seized MDMA exceeded ₹15 lakh, reflecting the economic scale of the drug trade in the area.

These developments underscore the ongoing battle against narcotics in Kerala, with law enforcement agencies employing increasingly sophisticated methods to combat the issue. The success of Operation Toofan has prompted further action, including plans to target reckless drivers and enhance road safety measures.
