Open source strategy: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also wants to replace Microsoft Office

The state government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has announced plans to replace Microsoft Office with an open-source alternative, as part of its strategy to increase digital sovereignty. While the transition is considered a priority, it cannot be implemented immediately due to the tight integration of Microsoft Office with various specialized processes. The government is currently piloting Nextcloud Office based on Collabora Office and is also evaluating LibreOffice as a desktop solution. In addition to replacing Microsoft SharePoint with Nextcloud, the state has already migrated 5,000 employees from SharePoint and aims to expand the use of Nextcloud to around 50,000 workers across ministries and local institutions. The state is also adopting OpenProject for project management and developing a locally controlled AI assistant using Open WebUI.
