Online reviews deleted: What are the Google stars worth?

Google has introduced a new feature in its Google Maps platform that highlights when online reviews have been removed due to complaints over defamation. This change, which became visible in early April 2026, allows users to see whether and how many ratings have been deleted from businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes. A recent analysis conducted by the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) found that a significant number of establishments in Germany have opted to remove negative feedback, with approximately 17 percent of more than 850 reviewed business listings having deleted some or all of their customer evaluations. The data revealed regional variations in the frequency of review deletions. In major cities like Frankfurt, nearly 30 percent of the evaluated hospitality businesses had removed at least one rating, while in the Odenwald region, around nine percent of the 87 assessed businesses did so. In other urban centers such as Berlin and Cologne, almost one-third of the surveyed businesses had deleted reviews, whereas in Munich and Nuremberg, the rate was roughly one in four. In Leipzig and Hamburg, the proportion was even lower, with about one in five businesses removing reviews. Despite these findings, none of the surveyed business owners in Hesse were willing to comment directly on the issue. The main executive of the hotel and catering association Dehoga in Hesse, Gisbert Kern, expressed support for increased transparency on review platforms. He noted that online ratings are crucial for both customers and businesses, serving as a key factor in decision-making and competition. Kern emphasized the importance of platforms making their moderation processes clear to users, stating that this helps maintain trust and fairness. However, Kern also warned against generalizing based solely on the presence of deleted reviews. He pointed out that the removal of a rating does not automatically imply that a business is suppressing legitimate criticism. Instead, he suggested that many reviews are deleted because they violate platform guidelines or are proven to come from individuals who were not actual guests. These points align with Google’s own guidance regarding the handling of user-generated content. Over the years, the Dehoga association has received numerous reports from members about problematic reviews. Small family-run businesses, in particular, find unfair or inaccurate one-star reviews especially damaging. Such reviews can quickly affect average scores and influence potential visitors' perceptions. Kern highlighted that even a small number of inappropriate or manipulated reviews can significantly harm a business's reputation. He further noted that the use of reviews as a form of pressure, such as demanding positive feedback in exchange for favorable treatment, is particularly concerning. The association has also criticized purchased positive reviews, arguing that they distort competition and erode consumer confidence. Kern stressed that consistent action against fake reviews is essential to preserve the integrity of online evaluation systems. Consumer advocates have also raised concerns about the impact of manipulated reviews on market dynamics and public trust. While the majority of customers provide honest and fair assessments, the presence of even a few misleading or fabricated reviews can have a noticeable effect on a business's standing. As the debate continues, the role of platforms like Google in ensuring transparency and accountability remains under scrutiny.

Why factuality (85): The article reports on a trend observed by the dpa through a sample of over 850 online entries, noting that 17% of businesses had deleted reviews due to complaints about defamation. It provides regional breakdowns (Frankfurt, Odenwald, Fulda, etc.) and mentions Google's new feature indicating delete

Why objectivity (78): The tone remains informative but includes some subjective phrasing such as 'Viele Betriebe lassen Kritik entfermen' which implies a judgment about business behavior. The article also uses emotive language like 'Was sind Google-Sterne wert?' suggesting skepticism toward online ratings.
