Ogun students seek 26% UNESCO benchmark funding for education

Students in Ogun State have demanded that the next governor allocate 26 percent of the state's annual budget to education, aligning with the UNESCO benchmark for educational investment. The call came during a solidarity rally held in Abeokuta, the state capital, in support of Senator Solomon Adeola, the APC governorship candidate for Ogun State. The rally was organized by the Students' Wing of the Yayi Progressive Movement, which backs Adeola's political ambitions. During the event, Oladotun Opaleye, the coordinator of the Students' Wing, emphasized the importance of meeting the UNESCO standard for education funding. He stated that the group would hold the senator accountable to ensure that the promised allocation is fulfilled once he assumes office. Opaleye expressed confidence that Adeola, whom he described as valuing quality education, would honor this commitment. The rally drew participation from over 10,000 students, who praised Adeola for his recent efforts in the education sector. Among these efforts were the payment of bursaries and scholarships to 5,312 students across the state. Opaleye highlighted that this initiative was undertaken without any conditions attached, a move he claimed had not been replicated by any previous governor in Ogun State's history. In addition to advocating for increased funding, the students also urged Adeola to prioritize the rehabilitation of infrastructure in tertiary institutions. They pointed out that many campuses suffer from inadequate facilities, including dilapidated laboratories and classrooms. Opaleye stressed the need for substantial improvements in these areas, stating that such developments would benefit Nigerian students broadly. The Students' Wing also encouraged students throughout Ogun State to support Adeola's gubernatorial bid. Opaleye expressed optimism about achieving their goal of securing 250,000 votes for the senator in the upcoming 2027 governorship election. He attributed this expectation to the groundwork already laid and the ongoing efforts of the movement to mobilize student support.
