Oeiras will be one of the host cities of Science Comes to Town in 2027

Oeiras has been selected as one of four European cities to host the initiative 'Science Comes to Town' in 2027, alongside Aarhus (Denmark), Genoa (Italy), and Kaunas (Lithuania). Funded by the Horizon Europe program with €6 million, the initiative aims to bring science closer to local communities by transforming urban spaces into living laboratories of knowledge. The event will feature hundreds of activities across five research missions focused on climate adaptation, cancer research, smart and carbon-neutral cities, ocean ecosystem restoration, and soil health for food security. In Portugal, the project will be led by a partnership between the city of Oeiras and the António Xavier Institute of Chemical and Biological Technologies (ITQB) at the New University of Lisbon. Portugal’s share of funding is €600,000, with additional support expected from private investors.
