In a recent crackdown on economic sabotage, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Edo Command has arrested two individuals accused of purchasing diesel that had been siphoned from telecommunications infrastructure within the state. This action marks a significant step in the NSCDC's ongoing efforts to protect critical national assets and combat organized crime that undermines economic stability.

The arrests took place following an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) Department in conjunction with the Intelligence and Investigation Department of the NSCDC. During this operation, which occurred on Thursday in the Utesi community, two suspects—aged 21 and 29—were apprehended. These individuals are alleged to have participated in the illegal acquisition of diesel, which had previously been stolen from telecommunication towers in the region.

This incident follows the earlier arrest of another suspect on June 15, who was charged with siphoning diesel from an IHS telecommunications transceiver facility. In response to that arrest, Mr. Saidi Akintayo, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, ordered further investigations aimed at identifying additional participants in the illicit supply chain and those responsible for creating a market for stolen petroleum products. As part of these investigations, several items believed to be linked to the illegal transactions were recovered during the most recent operation.

According to preliminary findings, the suspects are believed to have engaged in the procurement of diesel from unauthorized and dubious sources. Their actions are thought to contribute significantly to the vandalism of essential infrastructure and broader economic sabotage. Investigations are currently underway to determine the extent of their involvement and to identify potential accomplices. Once the inquiry is complete, the suspects will be formally charged and presented before the courts as per legal procedures.

Mr. Akintayo emphasized the NSCDC's unwavering commitment to safeguarding vital national assets and infrastructure throughout Edo State. He stated that the organization would persist in employing both intelligence and operational tactics to dismantle criminal networks and prevent economic saboteurs from having any room to operate. Furthermore, he expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Edo Government towards enhancing the state's overall security framework.

He also highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation, noting that effective intelligence sharing and joint operations have played crucial roles in preserving peace and ensuring the safety of citizens' properties and lives. Mr. Akintayo issued a stern warning to anyone involved in acts of vandalism or the illegal trade of stolen petroleum products, urging them to cease such activities immediately or risk facing the full consequences of the law.

Additionally, he encouraged the public to actively assist security agencies by offering timely and accurate information. Emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility, he called upon residents to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious activities. With continued collaboration between security forces and the community, there remains hope for a more secure environment where critical infrastructure can thrive without threat.
