A 30-year-old Russian national has been identified as the perpetrator of a triple murder at a shooting range near Danilovgrad, Croatia, according to local media reports. The incident occurred on Monday, September 1, 2026, during which the suspect shot three employees before turning the gun on himself. The victims were Petar Globarević, 24, Momir Radonjić, 67, and Nemanja Kapor, 20, all working at the shooting range. The suspect, named Mikhail Šabunin, fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to one of the victims and later attempted to escape by taxi toward Herceg Novi, approximately 120 kilometers away. Police found him early Tuesday morning in a forest area near Topla, where he was surrounded and ultimately committed suicide after firing at officers. According to information released by the newspaper Vijesti, Šabunin had previously crossed the border into Montenegro multiple times in the days leading up to the attack. Between July 7th and July 12th, he entered the country eight times, each time traveling by bus through different border crossings, including Dobrakovo, Sitnica, Šćepan Polje, and Vraćenovići. His final entry into Montenegro was via Vraćenovići on July 12th. Despite these frequent visits, Šabunin was not listed in police records, indicating he operated under a false identity or evaded detection. On the day of the murders, he arrived at the shooting range around 4:45 pm and spent several hours there before carrying out the attack. The shooting range’s owner, who was reportedly sleeping in one of the facility’s rooms at the time, discovered the bodies and alerted authorities. According to Vijesti, Šabunin initially targeted the 24-year-old instructor, Petr Globarević, with multiple shots, followed by two more victims inside the armory section. He fired numerous rounds at each of them, killing all three. The police confirmed that none of the officers present were injured during the confrontation. Šabunin, however, managed to take some weapons and ammunition from the site before fleeing in a black Seat Cordoba with license plate PG AC 472. This vehicle belonged to one of the deceased, as per police investigations. After escaping by car, Šabunin continued his flight by taxi towards Herceg Novi. Upon arrival, he lacked sufficient funds to pay for the ride, prompting the driver to seize his passport and mobile phone. These details have not yet been officially disclosed by law enforcement. However, police confirmed that Šabunin used a taxi to continue his escape. During the search operation, special units and a military helicopter were deployed to locate the suspect. By late evening, authorities confirmed that Šabunin had been located in the area of Herceg Novi and were conducting further actions. In addition to the physical evidence, surveillance footage from the shooting range has revealed critical details about Šabunin's movements. A source close to the investigation told Vijesti that Šabunin may have used both hands and two pieces of weaponry during the attack. While this detail remains unconfirmed, it suggests a level of preparedness and intent. Furthermore, photographs taken at the shooting range show Šabunin wearing a cap and light shirt, smiling, though the exact timing of the photo relative to the killings is unknown. Montenegro’s Interior Minister, Lazar Šćepanović, stated that Šabunin had visited the shooting range in previous days, raising questions about his familiarity with the location. The police have since launched a thorough investigation to determine the motive behind the attack, as well as to examine whether Šabunin had prior connections to the facility or its staff. The government has also announced two days of mourning in honor of the victims, with Prime Minister Milojko Spajić expressing condolences to their families.
