In Illinois, Solrite’s approach involves installing large-capacity batteries in residential properties, enabling these homes to act as mini-power stations when needed. Regan George, Solrite’s founder and CEO, explained that the company strategically selects locations where it has agreements with utilities or grid operators. These partnerships allow Solrite to access the stored energy from its leased batteries during times of high grid stress, ensuring that the utility can maintain stable service while compensating Solrite for its contribution. The company began as Solnova in 2017, focusing primarily on rooftop solar installations, before rebranding as Solrite in 2023 to emphasize its shift toward VPP technologies. Under Solrite’s current model, customers can opt for a monthly payment plan that includes the installation of a 60-kilowatt-hour battery, significantly larger than the typical residential requirement. This capacity ensures that households can remain powered during outages, with sufficient storage to sustain daily usage for several days. The company also offers optional solar panel installations, allowing customers to generate their own electricity at a discounted rate of 12 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is lower than the standard utility rate. The cost of purchasing a similar battery and solar setup outright would exceed $30,000, making Solrite’s leasing option a more accessible alternative. By owning the equipment and managing its deployment, Solrite ensures that the batteries are optimized for grid support, drawing from multiple units simultaneously to create a scalable power resource akin to a conventional power plant. Solrite utilizes batteries specifically designed for VPP applications, rather than repurposing consumer-grade models. Manufacturers such as Duracell and Sonnen supply these specialized units, which are engineered to operate efficiently within the framework of a coordinated energy network. This distinction enhances performance and reliability, aligning with the growing demand for resilient, sustainable energy solutions. As Solrite continues to expand its footprint in Illinois, the company plans to increase its workforce and operational reach, currently serving approximately 7,500 homes with its VPP systems. With around 50 employees, Solrite is positioning itself as a leader in the state’s clean energy transition, leveraging innovative technology and strategic partnerships to drive progress in the sector.
