The Dutch withdrew some of their gold from the U.S. and Canada and shipped it to London.

The Netherlands' Central Bank (DNB) has moved 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to London, citing increasing geopolitical tensions as the reason. The move aims to improve the accessibility of these reserves during crises, allowing for quicker responses. According to the DNB, holding gold in London facilitates easier trading compared to holdings in New York and Ottawa. The bank’s chairman, Olaf Sleijpen, emphasized the importance of strengthening resilience despite the assumption that the gold may not be needed immediately. The total Dutch gold reserves amount to 612.4 tonnes, valued at €72.2 billion by the end of 2025. Before this transfer, the Netherlands held 31.3% of its gold in New York and 19.7% in Ottawa, but after the shift, both cities hold 18.5% each, while London now holds 32.1%. The remaining 30.8% remains stored in the Netherlands. The transfer was carried out using a combination of buying and selling, along with physical transportation of bullion, avoiding the need to melt gold ingots.

The Dutch central bank has withdrawn 86 tons of gold from its vaults in the United States, with a remarkable explanation.

The Netherlands' central bank (DNB) has moved gold reserves worth billions of euros from North America back to Europe as part of preparations for potential crises amid growing global political instability. Between March and August, 86 tons of gold were transferred from New York and Ottawa to London, reducing their share of total Dutch gold reserves from 31.3% and 19.7%, respectively, to 18.5% in both cities. The move aims to improve liquidity and accessibility of the country’s gold reserves, according to DNB governor Olaf Sleijpen. Over 27 tons of gold were physically transported directly to a secure vault at a military base near Zeist, while the remaining 59 tons were transferred via financial transactions, selling gold in New York and buying equivalent amounts in London. The Bank of England’s gold is considered more liquid and accessible in times of crisis compared to reserves held in New York and Ottawa.
