New DNA tracking helps spot rare ‘Tai O fish’ in Hong Kong waters after 10 years

A Hong Kong academic, Jack Ip Chi-ho from Lingnan University, used environmental DNA (eDNA) technology to detect the critically endangered Chinese bahaba, or 'Tai O fish,' in Hong Kong waters for the first time in over 10 years. The study, led by Ip and Professor Wang Junjie from South China Normal University, involved developing a genetic identification method to trace the fish using DNA traces in the marine environment. The discovery came after approximately 1,300 juvenile Chinese bahaba were released into the Pearl River Estuary from the mainland. The findings suggest that some of the released fish may have migrated into Hong Kong waters. Ip noted that the eDNA technology is highly sensitive and can identify the presence of a species based on even minute genetic traces left in the environment.
