Planned railway line between Ljubljana and Nakli just across the courtyards of private land

On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 4:30 pm, the public presentation of the proposed national spatial plan for upgrading the railway line between Ljubljana and Kranj/Naklo will begin in Room 15 of the Municipal Office of Kranj. The event will include an environmental impact assessment. The planned railway upgrade aims to increase capacity and improve service quality, with speeds reaching up to 160 km/h for passenger traffic and 100 km/h for freight. The section between Ljubljana and Naklo will be extended with a second track, running parallel to the existing one. This new route would bypass private land near the Stanežiče, Jeprca road and pass through a covered tunnel and cut-and-cover section near Medno, connecting to the current rail line. From there, it would proceed through another tunnel in Svetje and a new cut-and-cover section in Labore before rejoining the existing track. The project includes several key stations, such as Šiška and Kranj, where speed limits will be reduced. Travel times on the Ljubljana, Kranj section are projected to decrease by three to four minutes for light passenger trains, six minutes for regional services, and five minutes for international trains. Overall, travel time along the entire Ljubljana, Kranj, Jesenice route could be shortened by ten to fifteen minutes. New facilities will be built at multiple stations, including parking areas, technology buildings, and commercial spaces. In Medvode, a parking lot for 50 cars and a technological building with a transport office will be constructed. In Škofja Loka, a new logistics warehouse and two P+R lots for 140 vehicles will be added. Kranj station will be transformed into a passenger hub with multi-functional platforms, business spaces, and a large technological building measuring up to 85 by 18 meters. Additional bus terminals, bike parking, and expanded P+R options will also be introduced. A separate section for Struževo is planned, potentially linking the railway to Jože Pučnik Airport, though this is not part of the current national spatial plan. New stations in Struževo and Stanežiče will replace the existing one in Medno, while the station in Reteče will gain a P+R lot for at least 50 vehicles. A new freight terminal in Naklo will replace the previously planned one in Polica. Most stations will feature bicycle parking, some with rental options. Stations will also include ticketing kiosks, restrooms, storage areas, and waiting lounges. The project involves extensive construction, including tunnels and covered cuts. In Medno, a dual-track tunnel of 875 meters and a total of 2,277 meters of cut-and-cover work will be completed. In Labor, a dual-track tunnel of 2,105 meters will be built, and in Stanežiče, a covered cut of 300 meters will be constructed.
