A man on Long Island has become the first person in the New York area to be diagnosed with Bourbon disease, a rare tick-borne illness that has raised concerns among public health officials and medical experts. The case highlights a growing trend of tick activity expanding into urban environments, challenging assumptions about where these arachnids typically thrive. This development comes amid a surge in tick-related illnesses across the United States, driven by climate change and shifting ecosystems. The incident began on a seemingly ordinary evening in mid-July when a couple living in a Midtown Manhattan apartment encountered an unexpected visitor. As they prepared for bed, the husband screamed, pointing to a small, red creature crawling across the sheets. Initially mistaken for a spider, the creature was identified as a lone star tick, a species typically associated with rural areas. The presence of the tick in an urban setting sparked questions about how it arrived and whether other ticks might soon follow. Tick populations have been documented in New York City since the 1970s, according to historical records. However, recent studies suggest a notable increase in their numbers, even in densely populated areas. Environmental factors, including rising temperatures and changes in land use, have contributed to the expansion of tick habitats. These shifts have allowed ticks to move closer to cities, bringing with them a range of pathogens previously thought to affect only rural communities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that emergency room visits related to tick bites have reached historic highs in nearly every U.S. region since 2017. Among the diseases linked to ticks are Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and the rare condition known as alpha-gal syndrome. Now, Bourbon disease has joined this list, with a Long Island resident becoming the first in the New York area to contract it. Michael Larkin, a Long Islander, was the first to be diagnosed with Bourbon disease. His initial symptoms included fever, rash, and severe headaches. Despite testing for Lyme disease, the true cause remained elusive until a prolonged antibody study revealed the presence of the Bourbon virus. This virus, which has been identified in only a few cases nationally, underscores the evolving threat posed by tick-borne illnesses. Lyme disease remains the most common tick-related illness, with over 476,000 cases treated annually in the United States. However, individual ticks can carry multiple pathogens, complicating diagnosis and treatment. Medical professionals warn that as tick ranges expand, so too does the variety of diseases they transmit. Some of these conditions can lead to serious complications, including brain inflammation, neurological damage, and even fatalities. Dr. Michael Augenbraun, director of infectious diseases at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, notes that while the diversity of tick-borne diseases may seem alarming, it also reflects the adaptability of these organisms. “If it was an investment strategy, it would be very successful,” he says, adding that the severity of some of these illnesses necessitates greater awareness and vigilance among healthcare providers. Currently, few vaccines exist to prevent tick-related illnesses. A Lyme disease vaccine is under development, having completed Phase 3 clinical trials. Until such options become widely available, prevention strategies remain critical. Public health officials urge individuals to take precautions, such as using repellents, wearing protective clothing, and checking for ticks after spending time outdoors. As tick populations continue to grow, so too must efforts to monitor and mitigate their impact on public health.
