Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have developed a new model to understand human mobility patterns by analyzing anonymized cellphone data. Unlike previous models that assumed uniform movement rules, this study reveals that human mobility follows a 'polycentric' pattern, where individuals frequently travel between multiple centers rather than focusing on a single location. The research draws inspiration from a visual representation called 'View of the World from 9th Avenue,' which illustrates how perception of space might influence movement behavior. The findings suggest that current models fail to account for the complexity of real-world mobility, while the new approach aligns more closely with observed travel behaviors. The study was published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.
