After years of waiting, Mitsubishi has unveiled a new partner.

Mitsubishi has unveiled the all-new fifth-generation Pajero after years of anticipation, marking its return to global markets and positioning itself as the brand's new flagship model. The vehicle, which retains the iconic ladder-frame chassis and seven-seat configuration, is designed to compete directly with models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser. The launch comes amid efforts by Mitsubishi to redefine its identity following recent challenges. The new Pajero is set to debut globally and will eventually make its way to European markets, though specific dates have yet to be confirmed. Despite its modern design, the car remains faithful to the core philosophy that made it one of the most recognizable off-road icons over decades. It aims to balance rugged terrain capability with comfort for everyday driving. This latest iteration continues a legacy that began in 1982, with more than 3.29 million units sold across over 170 countries. The Pajero’s reputation was further solidified through its success in the Dakar Rally, where Mitsubishi achieved 12 overall victories, including seven consecutive wins. Production of the previous generation ceased three years ago without an immediate successor, prompting Mitsubishi to view this new model as crucial in rebuilding the brand's identity. The company explicitly describes the fifth-generation Pajero as its new paradigm model, signaling the direction of the brand's future development over the coming decade. Underneath its contemporary exterior lies a robust ladder-frame chassis derived from the Triton pickup platform. The Pajero features enhanced suspension tuning, a new five-link rear suspension system, and a front axle utilizing a dual-joint steering mechanism. A key innovation is the integration of the Super Select 4WD-II (SS4-II) system combined with the Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC). These systems provide drivers with multiple modes, Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock, to adapt to different terrains. The vehicle offers ground clearance of up to 230 mm, approach angle of 30.4 degrees, breakover angle of 22.6 degrees, and departure angle of 25.8 degrees, clearly indicating it is more than just another SUV. A notable feature is the Multi Meter, a modern interpretation of traditional off-road gauges. This system allows drivers to monitor altitude, compass readings, temperature, vehicle tilt angles, and torque distribution between wheels via the dashboard display. Additionally, a 3D camera system provides visibility beneath the front of the vehicle, aiding navigation over obstacles, steep inclines, and rough terrain. Powering the new Pajero is a 2.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine equipped with variable geometry turbocharging and capable of producing up to 480 Nm of torque. Based on the Triton engine, it is estimated to produce around 150 kilowatts of power. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission featuring a sport mode. While the current version does not include electrification, Mitsubishi has indicated that electric variants may be considered in the future. The Pajero measures 4.92 meters in length, 1.925 meters in width, and 1.91 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2.87 meters. Inside, the vehicle offers seven seats arranged in three rows. The second row includes a 150-millimeter longitudinal adjustment and a mechanism for easier access to the third row, which is designed to accommodate adults comfortably. Features such as ventilated seats and a three-zone climate control system enhance passenger comfort. The cabin has been upgraded to offer a more prestigious feel compared to the previous generation, with a larger central display prominently featured. Additional features include classic tailgate design, a spare tire hidden within the underbody, and a range of factory-installed accessories and protection options tailored for off-road conditions.
