A cinema under the stars at the Skatepark Maribor

In August 2026, the annual 'Kino pod zvezdami' (Cinema under the Stars) event will take place again at the Skatepark in Maribor, Slovenia. The screening will feature the Slovenian film 'Ida,' directed by Ester Ivakič, which tells the story of a young girl who believes singing can save her grandmother from death. The event is organized by Europe Direct Podravje (PIP Institute) and the Society for Film Culture Development as part of the European Film Week. This initiative aims to bring cinema closer to the public, using film stories to explore social issues. The event will include interactive activities such as a wheel of fortune with questions about the EU, Slovenian, and European cinema, offering prizes from local businesses. In case of rain, the screening will be moved indoors to September 29, 2026. The event is supported by several cultural and sports organizations, as well as local businesses.

A free outdoor cinema will take place in the Skatepark of Maribor on August 28, 2026, starting at 8 p.m. The event will feature the Slovenian film Ida, directed by Ester Ivakič. The screening is part of the European Film Week and organized by Europe Direct Podravje (PIP Office) and the Association for the Development of Film Culture within the framework of the European Film Week. This year marks the third consecutive time the summer cinema has taken place outside the city center, moving to Nova Vas, where sports culture and artistic performances come together. The film tells the story of a ten-year-old girl named Ida who joins her school choir with the belief that singing can save her grandmother’s life. However, Ida’s singing is so off-key that even the dead rise from their graves to join her performance. The narrative takes viewers into a small Prekmurian countryside, exploring themes of tradition, family, and the power of art. The choice of this Slovenian film reflects the organizers' commitment to showcasing domestic cinematic talent and diversity. René Puhar from the Association for the Development of Film Culture emphasized the importance of bringing art closer to the public through such events. “These kinds of events bring art closer to people and create new spaces where different generations can meet around a film,” he said. “It is crucial to continue the tradition of urban cinema and bring projections even closer to the community. After the successful 10th edition of the Summer Cinema Minoriti, we once again move to Nova Vas, where sports culture will once again combine with artistic events.” The decision to screen a Slovenian film aims to highlight the quality and variety of local film production while supporting homegrown filmmakers. This year's outdoor cinema will follow the success of last year’s screening of the youth film Igrišča ne damo! which attracted many visitors, particularly young people and families. Organizers expect similar attendance this time, with hopes of drawing a large crowd. In addition to the film, there will be a stand offering bicycle fortune-telling, where attendees can spin a wheel and answer questions about the European Union, Slovenian, or European cinema. Those who provide correct answers will receive prizes donated by restaurants Poper, Optika Auer, and Teta Frida. Attendees are advised to bring a mat or their own chair, as seating will be limited. In case of rain, the screening will be moved to Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 8 p.m. The event is co-organized by Europe Direct Podravje (PIP Office), the Association for the Development of Film Culture, the Maribor Theatre, Cultural Quarter Minoriti, Spank Maribor, and Sport Maribor d.o.o. Financial support comes from Ledinek Engineering d.o.o., restaurant Poper, Teta Frida, and Optika Auer.
