Mercedes has acknowledged a mistake long noticed by drivers: "We went a little too far." The German automaker, once a leader in pushing automotive technology toward large touchscreens, is now reversing course, reintroducing physical buttons into its vehicles. The average ergonomic rating dropped from 2.3 in 2019 to 2.7 in 2026. According to ADAC, the main issue lies in complex menus and touch surfaces that lack physical feedback. Drivers are forced to look away from the road longer, increasing the risk of accidents. As a result, Euro NCAP has revised its safety evaluation criteria this year. Vehicles seeking top ratings must now allow key functions, such as turn signals, sirens, windshield wipers, warning indicators, and the eCall emergency system, to be controlled via physical buttons or switches. This move underscores the importance of minimizing distractions during driving. Studies further highlight the growing divide in driver preferences. A survey by TÜV found that 72 percent of drivers believe digital technologies make driving easier, yet 53 percent admit that using touchscreens while driving diverts their attention from the road.
