More than 300 Arrested for Fires in Greece

More than 300 individuals have been arrested in Greece over wildfires sparked by negligence or intentional acts, according to officials. The arrests come amid a surge in severe forest fires fueled by prolonged drought and high temperatures. Authorities are intensifying efforts to combat arsonists and protect historical sites from damage. The recent incidents include a fire on the island of Crete, which broke out after a tourist grilled with charcoal near wooded areas. According to reports, the individual claimed he was unaware that open-air grilling was prohibited under windy conditions and dry weather. This case exemplifies a broader trend: since the start of the year, 308 people have been detained for causing fires through carelessness or deliberate actions. Of these, 272 cases were due to negligence and 36 were classified as intentional, according to Georgios Artopoulos, a spokesperson for the Greek Fire Service. Authorities warn that the risk of fires has increased due to ongoing dryness and strong winds. High temperatures are expected to persist across much of Greece, with forecasts predicting temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in many regions. These conditions create an environment where fires can spread rapidly, prompting emergency services to remain on high alert. To safeguard its historic landmarks, Greece is implementing a new fire detection system. The initiative involves installing advanced monitoring equipment at 22 key archaeological sites. The system includes optical and thermal cameras capable of providing a 360-degree view. Some models feature swivel and tilt capabilities to focus on suspicious areas. Mobile firefighting cannons will also be deployed at select locations to enable rapid initial response to fires. The system was successfully tested at the foot of the Acropolis of Mycenae on the Peloponnese peninsula on July 31. During this trial, a fire was detected quickly, demonstrating the effectiveness of the technology. By the end of August, six such systems will be operational, including installations around the Acropolis in Athens, the Palace of Nestor, and the Monastery of Hosios Lukas. Eight more systems are scheduled to be activated in September. This project forms part of Greece’s civil protection program called “Aigis,” funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Fund. The goal is to detect fires at vulnerable cultural and natural sites early, thereby reducing the time required for emergency responders to reach affected areas. The implementation of the fire detection system reflects a strategic approach to wildfire prevention and heritage preservation. As Greece continues to face challenges posed by climate change and increasing frequency of extreme weather events, such measures aim to enhance preparedness and response capabilities.
