Today’s celebration of Mary’s Assumption in Slovenia drew thousands of devotees across the country, with one of the largest gatherings taking place at the shrine of the Virgin Mary on Brezje. The feast, considered the most significant Marian celebration in Slovenia, saw numerous believers participate in solemn masses at churches and shrines throughout the nation. This year, the occasion inspired many to travel, pray, and offer their hopes and gratitude to the Mother of God. The central site of the festivities was Brezje, which attracted a large crowd of pilgrims. A representative from the local media, Tatjana Splichal, documented the proceedings there. Among the attendees were high-ranking clergy, including Bishop Stanislav Zore, who presided over the mass. The event brought together people from all over Slovenia, despite the heat, with some participants dressed in traditional folk attire. Many arrived by bicycle, adding to the festive atmosphere. Pilgrims gathered around the image of the Virgin Mary, known as “Mary the Helper,” and took part in prayers and offerings. Refreshments were made available to ensure comfort during the long day of devotion. In another part of the country, the town of Vuzenica celebrated the same feast with its own unique traditions. At the Church of the Virgin Mary on the Hill of Kamna, nearly a thousand worshippers attended the morning mass, which began at 10 am. The church, located on the right bank of the Drava River near the road connecting Vuzenica to Vuhred, has been a popular pilgrimage site for centuries. Its rich history and picturesque setting have drawn visitors from far and wide. The church is adjacent to a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony Martin Slomšk, further enhancing the spiritual significance of the location. Father Tadej Legnar, the parish priest of Vuzenica, explained the importance of the feast: “Mary is our mother, who connects us. Just as we used to go home to our mothers when we had them, and just as those who still have mothers visit them for tea and cake, so too do we, as Christians, go to Our Lady to share our joys and trials.” The celebration was not only a religious observance but also a moment of community bonding, with music, fellowship, and shared faith playing key roles. According to local legend, the church's origins date back to a miraculous event. It is said that before the church was built, two men were traveling to the holy sites of Visarje when they stopped at a tavern in the lower part of Vuzenica called Premrov. There, they encountered a group of soldiers searching for a stolen golden chalice. One young traveler, suspected of theft, was sentenced to death and hung. However, the next morning, his father came to retrieve his body, only to find him alive. The man claimed he had been saved by a white-clad woman who supported him during the hanging. In gratitude, the family decided to build a church in her honor, which became the Church of the Virgin Mary on the Hill of Kamna. To this day, the church remains a vital center of pilgrimage and spiritual life for the region. The festival continued into the afternoon, with additional activities planned for the coming days. As the sun set over the hills, the faithful departed with small tokens, magnets and icons of the Virgin Mary, as reminders of their time spent in prayer and devotion. The celebrations marked another year of tradition, faith, and communal unity in Slovenia’s Catholic communities.
