Man charred to death in car explosion on highway in Karnataka, ‘kidnapped’ woman survives

Her parents subsequently filed a kidnapping complaint at the Jayanagar Police Station, prompting authorities to investigate the matter.

As the vehicle traveled along National Highway 48, Nagendra allegedly threatened to kill Ramya. During the journey, he reportedly showed her an explosive device, indicating his intent to take his own life alongside hers. However, the situation escalated dramatically near Jogihalli in Sira taluk when Nagendra attacked Ramya with a knife inside the moving vehicle. At this point, the driver, Praveen, stopped the car, enabling Ramya to unlock the door and flee to safety.

Moments after Ramya escaped, a powerful explosion rocked the vehicle, engulfing it in flames. Nagendra was trapped inside and perished instantly. The blast caused significant damage to the surrounding area and led to a traffic jam extending over a kilometer on the busy highway.

Police arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and discovered Nagendra’s charred remains inside the wreckage. They confirmed that both the driver and the survivor had stated that Nagendra had used an explosive device, which led to the explosion. Preliminary investigations suggest that Nagendra might have used either a country bomb or a Molotov cocktail to ignite the fire. The police have recovered what appears to be explosive material from the vehicle and are conducting further tests to determine the exact nature of the substance used, its origin, and the mechanism behind the detonation.

District Superintendent of Police Ashok K.V. confirmed that the police had received information about a vehicle caught in flames on the highway and quickly responded to the location. Upon arrival, they found the driver and Ramya outside the vehicle, while the car was fully engulfed in flames. Through their inquiries, they learned of the explosion and the presence of a body inside the vehicle. Ashok emphasized that the police would continue their investigation to ascertain the precise circumstances under which the explosion occurred and whether Nagendra acted alone or if others were involved.
