Maharashtra, NTM-CIIL join hands for translation work

Maharashtra's Directorate of Languages, in collaboration with the National Translation Mission (NTM) and the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), has initiated a joint effort to enhance translation work. On Wednesday, a delegation led by Director Arun Gite and including Assistant Director Santosh Gosavi, along with translators Namdev Koli and Anand Gangan, visited the NTM-CIIL campus in Mysuru. The purpose of the visit was to discuss strategies for translating academic content and to explore opportunities for deeper institutional cooperation. The meeting took place with key officials from both organizations, including CIIL Director Basavaraja Kodagunti and NTM Officer-in-Charge Tariq Khan. During the session, several experts from NTM, S. Winston Cruz, Biswadip Gogoi, Jnana Murthy B. R., Sunetra Sholapurkar, and Vaishnavi Yuvraj Sawant, participated actively. Discussions spanned over two to three days, focusing on creating a detailed plan for academic translations and reinforcing existing ties between the Directorate of Languages and the NTM-CIIL. This engagement follows a history of interaction between the Directorate of Languages and the NTM. In previous years, officials from Maharashtra had sought guidance from the NTM on linguistic and translation issues and had visited CIIL multiple times. The NTM had already contributed to the Directorate's capacity-building efforts through a tailored training program in 2019–2020. This current initiative aligns with the government's broader vision outlined in the “Viksit Maharashtra 2047” program, which aims to translate 500 Marathi books into various Indian and international languages. The visit to CIIL is specifically intended to leverage the expertise of the NTM in designing and executing this ambitious translation project. The focus is on ensuring that the translation process is well-planned and effectively implemented, thereby contributing to the enrichment of academic resources available in Marathi and beyond. The collaborative approach underscores the commitment of both entities to advancing multilingual education and cultural exchange. The discussions have been structured to promote knowledge exchange and support the creation of a holistic strategy for academic translation. This includes identifying best practices, setting benchmarks, and exploring innovative methods to ensure quality and consistency in translation outcomes. The collaboration is expected to strengthen the partnership between the Directorate of Languages, the NTM, and CIIL, fostering a more integrated and efficient system for translation services. Looking ahead, the successful outcome of these discussions will likely lead to the formalization of a cooperative framework that supports ongoing translation activities. This could involve regular consultations, shared resources, and joint projects aimed at expanding access to educational materials in multiple languages. The initiative represents a step towards greater linguistic inclusivity and the promotion of academic excellence across diverse communities.
