Four of Spain's five largest wildfires in recorded history have occurred within the past 12 months, marking an unprecedented escalation in both scale and frequency of such disasters. This alarming trend has been driven by climate change, which is rapidly altering the intensity and size of wildfires across the Iberian Peninsula. The summer of 2022 had already raised concerns due to the sheer number of hectares burned compared to previous years, but the situation over the last year has surpassed all historical records. Since August 2025, four of these catastrophic fires have ignited, with the fifth being the infamous 2004 Rio Tinto mining disaster fire in Huelva. These developments highlight a growing crisis in Spain’s ability to manage and contain large-scale wildfires. The current wildfire in Niebla, Huelva, continues to burn and has climbed to the top of the list of Spain’s largest wildfires due to its extreme ferocity and its impact on local atmospheric conditions through the thick smoke plume hovering above the blaze. According to estimates from forest engineer and blogger Celso Coco, this fire reached approximately 45,000 hectares by Friday, excluding interior islands that remain untouched. His calculations include data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and approximate measurements of recent fires whose official sizes have yet to be confirmed. Following Niebla, the second-largest fire was the one in Larouco, Ourense, which consumed 37,765 hectares and began on August 15, 2025. In third place stands the fire in Burgohondo, Ávila, which started on July 22 and is estimated to have burned 36,541 hectares of forestland. When combined with the simultaneous fire in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Madrid, which scorched 14,795 hectares and was fought as a single incident, the total area burned would reach 51,336 hectares, making it the largest wildfire in Spanish history. The fourth position is contested between the 2004 Rio Tinto fire, which recorded either 34,290 or 29,867 hectares depending on the source, with the latter figure cited by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, and the more recent fire in La Mierla, Guadalajara, which began on July 16, 2026, and burned 32,600 hectares according to Coco's assessment. Coco explains that the increasing size of wildfires is due to a combination of factors including the effects of climate change, the progressive abandonment of rural areas, lack of forest management, and the subsequent accumulation of biomass vegetation, creating ideal conditions for fires to grow beyond control and frequently surpassing firefighting capabilities. Expanding the scope to the 18 largest wildfires in the historical record reveals a drastic increase in their size in recent years, with 11 of them occurring in the past five years. Previously, wildfires exceeding 20,000 hectares were rare occurrences, happening once per decade, except for the disastrous summer of 2004. Now, they have become the norm. Another indicator of changing trends is that in 2026, for the first time in history, the average size of major wildfires (those exceeding 500 hectares) in Spain exceeded 5,000 hectares. According to Coco's calculations, this summer alone, with data up to August 14, the average size of a major wildfire reached 5,367 hectares, surpassing the previous record set in 2025, when the average was 4,954 hectares. The average size for the period from 1968 to 2026 is 1,652 hectares, three times less than the current average. In a video released by the Andalusian regional government this Friday, Marc Castellnou, head of the Forestry Area for the Catalan Firefighters' Corps, outlined why recent wildfires are nearly unstoppable monsters. Analyzing the Niebla fire, he highlighted the challenges faced by firefighters in containing such vast and intense blazes.
