Local is promising

In the small town of Radenci, located in Slovenia, a familiar yet heartwarming tradition continued this year with the annual distribution of school backpacks under the initiative “Lokalno je obetavno,” which translates to “Locally is promising.” On August 22, 2026, the community once again came together to support young students entering primary school for the first time. This year marked the sixth consecutive year that children in their first grade received high-quality school backpacks filled with all necessary supplies, ensuring they could start their educational journey with confidence and joy. The initiative, organized by the Economic Interest Association (GIZ) “Lokalno je obetavno,” was spearheaded by Radenska d.o.o., the Municipality of Radenci, and the Agency SIV. The program has become a well-known and warmly accepted activity within the local community over the past six years. Its simple yet meaningful goal is to help children ease one of the biggest milestones in their childhood, starting school, and to provide some relief to parents during the often stressful preparations for the new academic year. This year, 43 first-graders received the backpacks. Among them were 22 children who will begin their primary education at Kajetan Kovič Primary School in Radenci in September, and 21 students heading to Kapela Primary School. The distribution of school supplies has become a recognizable and cherished part of the GIZ’s efforts to strengthen the local environment through tangible actions. It reflects the belief that even small gestures can make a real difference in the lives of children and families. Marián Šefčovič, General Director of Radenska Adriatic, expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing success of the initiative. He noted that the response from both children and parents each year reaffirms the power of simple acts to create positive change. His message emphasized the importance of helping children take their first steps into school with happiness and self-confidence, while also offering them curiosity and joyful experiences along their new path. The backpacks were not only given to children from Radenska d.o.o. and the municipality but also included those of employees working at the company and on the municipal level. Additionally, the municipality covered the cost of early insurance for these children. Beyond the practical aspect of providing school supplies, the event served as a celebration of a significant life milestone. The distribution was designed as a pleasant experience for the children and their families. Before receiving their new backpacks, the future first-graders eagerly watched a child-friendly performance titled Pogumna Fonza (Brave Fonz) presented by the Ku-Kuc theater. The atmosphere was festive and welcoming, reflecting the community's commitment to making this transition as smooth and enjoyable as possible for the youngest members of society. The initiative continues to highlight the collaborative spirit of Radenci’s residents and institutions, demonstrating how collective action can foster a supportive and nurturing environment for children as they embark on their educational journeys. As the school year approaches, the memory of this event will remain a symbol of hope and unity in the town.
